MSMP
MSMP is an alternative to the Manual Vacuum Aspiration (MVA) method for TSIA. It has certain advantages over MVA in that it is non invasive, prevents surgery and anaesthesia and allows treatment of pregnancy in its very early stages. Like MVA, it is safe and effective. To the client, it permits greater privacy and a degree of personal control. In several European countries, it is now a method preferred by majority of women, when given a choice.
The method involves use of pharmacological agents capable of causing uterine contractions. These include prostaglandins, anti-metabolites such as Methotrexate and anti progesterone such as Mifepristone.
Medical methods of TSIA have great potential to improve women's health and advance their reproductive rights especially in developing countries where unsafe abortion practices result in serious morbidity and mortality.
